What is a Ceilidh?

Ceilidh is an evening of traditional music and dance usually associated with Ireland or Scotland.

Other names for a similar evening - Barn Dance, Folk Dance, Hoe Down.

A Tenpenny Bit 'Ceilidh' is a mixture of English, Irish, Scottish and American music and dance.

The band and caller can run a whole evening for you if you wish, though sometimes organisers have their own items to include - speeches, cake cutting, picture slide shows, fund raisers such as raffles - appropriate to the event. The evenings are flexible to accommodate any requirements that you may have.

The dancing is very easy

  • no prior experience required
  • all of the dances are 'taught' by the caller before dancing
  • suitable for all ages, bringing the generations together
  • can include everyone, even those with 'two left feet'!

You can chose to start your wedding with a dance just for the bride and groom, or get everyone straight onto the dance floor from the start. The dance program can include dances that might already be known: The Gay Gordons, Canadian Barndance, The Veleta or St. Bernard's Waltz and 'new' dances: The OXO reel, Virginia Reel, Cumberland Square Eight, Stoke Golding (has a Strip the Willow) and many more.
